At the Pediatric Center of Round Rock we offer a Nutrition Management Program, designed to help children and families make the life-style changes necessary to promote and maintain health and prevent the life-long problems associated with childhood obesity.
Children are not responsible for buying or preparing their own food, so we need the cooperation of the entire family in order for this program to be successful. We have created a contract, given at the time of the initial visit, to inform parents about the need for their involvement and support. We also provide a list of exercise programs in the area to encourage an average of 1 hour of exercise per day.
We calculate the Body Mass Index at the time of a child’s well-check visit. When the BMI is over the 85 percentile, we initiate an evaluation to identify family risk factors or individual signs of high risk for future health consequences. Children who already show signs of hypertension, Acanthosis Nigricans, or any other red flags undergo a complete laboratory evaluation and eating habits investigation.
Pediatric Center of Round Rock created a specific diet for children with high BMI, along with monthly monitoring of weight and eating dairy. Our families understand that weight loss or maintenance implies changes in life style to warrant a life-long benefit for the children and their families. Changes in eating habits and exercise to achieve a healthy BMI may take up to 1 year.
